As citizen-consumers, we have tremendous influence over Pepsi. It has customers all over the world — meaning that, unlike the MPs in Uganda who are pushing this bill, Pepsi cares what we think and say about them. And for this piece of legislation, our position is clear — Pepsi must use its power as a major company in Uganda to communicate clearly to Ugandan legislators that this hateful bill must be stopped.

Malaysian seminars help teachers, parents recognize and stop homosexuality in kids

Last year, a state in Malaysia set up a camp to teach “effeminate” boys how to be more masculine. Now, parents and teachers are invited to seminars teaching them to recognize and curb homosexuality themselves.

The government-sponsored seminars teach attendees that “preferences for tight, light-colored clothes and large handbags” are signs of homosexuality in boys, while young girls who prefer to spend their time with other girls might be lesbians. Teachers and parents are also told not to show acceptance. 

Malaysia is a majority Muslim country, but an official with the Teachers Foundation of Malaysia, which runs the seminars, said they are “multireligious and multicultural, after all, all religions are basically against that type of behavior.” Ten such events have been held to date, with 1,500 people attending the most recent one, held Wednesday. It was led by Deputy Education Minister Puad Zarkashi, who has expressed concern about children learning tolerance of gays from their peers, Reuters reports.

1,500 people attended the most recent event like this. We have a serious problem here.

French mayor defies national law and marries gay couple

Mayor Jean Vila of the French town Cabestany officiated the marriage of a gay couple yesterday. National law in France allows for same-sex couples to enter into civil unions, but not marriages. 

“To outlaw homosexual marriage is to deny the reality of thousands of homosexual couples,” he said after the ceremony, held in the Cabestany City Hall. “This decision to join these two people for me is an act of anger and revolt in the face of the authorities’ refusal to legitimize such unions.” He did not enter the marriage in the official registry, however, to avoid the possibility of annulment.
