Dame Helen Mirren steps in to grant a dying boy’s wish to meet the Queen

Oliver Burton, ten, may have just weeks to live after being hit by cancer for a third time.

Visiting the Queen at Buckingham Palace topped his list of dream activities — but his family was told a meeting would not be possible.

So Dame Helen stepped in, bringing him in a limo to see her West End show The Audience — in which she plays the Queen — then taking him backstage to meet her corgis.

The actress, 67, even KNIGHTED the excited schoolboy “Sir Oliver” during his visit, telling The Sun: “It was a pleasure and a privilege to meet such a brave young man.

Ex-Coldstream Guard James, now a full-time carer for his son, said of the visit: “She stayed in character for the whole thing and had a butler. “She was really lovely.”

Oliver, from Leicester, was first diagnosed with leukaemia in 2006, aged three. He recovered but in 2010 the cancer returned — and once again he pulled through.

Then last Christmas he was diagnosed with cancer in his spine and bone marrow — and this time intensive treatment is not possible, so he returned home with his mum, dad, and brother Ethan, six.

The family have raised £10,000 for special trips for Oliver through the National Children’s Tumour Leukaemia Cancer Trust, which arranged the visit with Dame Helen. [x]

well, this made me fucking tear up

:-(

And now I’m crying.

Look, I’m an atheist, but Goddamn it, children are a GIFT. Who the fuck turns down a dying child’s greatest wish? You couldn’t take even 5 fucking minutes out of your schedule to make him happy? You didn’t even have to meet him, you could have at least made a video with a positive, uplifting message. I mean, jesus christ, it’s not that difficult.

The SC Prize is a competition for undergrad students, grad students, and professors. It is for a novel or biography published in the last year or an unpublished manuscript of at least 100 pages. I submitted the unfinished first draft of my novel The Boulevard. I have been really stalling on finishing it. I started it back in Nov of 2011. Reading over some parts I feel like my writing has improved leaps and bounds, considering I’ve taken 5 quarters/semesters of writing courses and workshops. In the description of the Prize, it states that if the manuscript is unfinished it must still be outstanding, and I know they haven’t given the Prize out the last two years because they didn’t feel any of the entries were worthy enough. Needless to say, I thought there was a slim chance in hell that my novel manuscript would win. But turns out it did. It has re-energized me to finish the novel and get down to editing it. Also, the $5,000 prize money is pretty awesome too.

Photo

Humans need more animal blood!

When people say these books are children’s books, as if to demean them, I balk. These books dealt with themes that adults do not fully understand or wish to. It dealt with racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, prejudice, and general ignorance. These books taught us that it doesn’t matter how you were raised, but that you get to choose to be kind, loyal, brave, and true. They taught us to be strong under the pressures of this world and to hold fast to what we know to be right. These books taught me so much, they changed me as a person. So just because they’re set against a fantastical backdrop with young protagonists does not mean that their value is any less real.

This.

First book: Starts with the double murder of a pair of twenty-one year olds who were much missed and leaving their baby son a war orphan. A child growing up in abusive conditions that would give Cinderella the horrors. Dealing with peers and teachers who are bullies. The fickleness of fame (from the darling of Gryffindor to the outcast.) The idea that there are things worth fighting and dying for, spoken by the child protagonist. Three children promptly acting on that willingness to sacrifice their lives, and two of them getting injured doing so.

Second book: The equivalent of racism with the pro-pureblood attitude. Plot driven by an eleven year old girl being groomed and then used by a charming, handsome older male. The imbalance of power and resultant abuse inherent in slavery. Fraud perpetuated by stealing something very intimate.

Third book: The equivalent of ableism with a decent, kind and competant adult being considered less than human because he has an illness that adversely affects his behaviour at certain times. A justice system that is the opposite of just. Promises of removing an abused child from the abusive environment can’t always be kept. The innocent suffer while the guilty thrive.

Fouth book: More fickleness of fame. The privileged mistreating and undermining the underprivileged because they can. A master punishing a slave for his own misjudgment, and the slave blaming herself. A sports tournament which involves mortal risk being cheered by spectators. A wonderful young man being murdered simply because he was in the way. A young boy being tortured, humilated and nearly murdered.

Fifth book: PTSD in the teenage protagonist. Severe depression in the protagonist’s godfather, triggered by inherited mental health issues and being forced to stay in a house where abuse occured. A bigoted tyrant who lives to crush everyone under her heel, torturing a teenager for telling the truth in the name of the government (and trying to suck his soul out too). The discovery that your idols can have feet of clay after all. An effort to save the life of someone dear and precious actually costing that very same life. The loss of a father-figure and the resultant guilt.

Sixth book: The idea that a soul can be broken beyond repair. Drugs with the potential for date rape are shown as having achieved exactly that in at least one case, resulting in a pregnancy. Well-meaning chauvinism trying to control the love life of a young woman. Internalised prejuidce resulting in refusing the one you love, not out of lack of love but out of fear of tainting them. The mortality of those that seem powerful and larger than life.

Seventh book: Bad situations can get worse, to the point where even the privileged end up suffering and afraid. More internalised prejudice and <strike>fear</strike> hysterical terror of tainting those you love. Self-sacrifice and the loss of loved ones, EVERYWHERE. Those who are bitter are often so with a reason. The necessity of defeating your inner demons, even though it’s never as cool as it sounds. Don’t underestimate those that are enslaved. Other people’s culture isn’t always like your own. Things often come full circle (war ending with the death of a dearly-loved pair of new parents and their orphaned baby son living with his dead mother’s blood relative instead of his young godfather). Even if ‘all is well’ the world is still imperfect, because it’s full of us brilliant imperfect humans.

So… still think that Harry Potter is a kid’s series with no depth?

Your argument is invalid the moment you try to demean something by regulating it to children’s literature. As if children’s literature is some how unimportant, infantile, or of lesser value than any other part of the literary canon. Children’s literature often shapes the way we see the world when we are still young and impressionable. It helps us learn about things that adults feel uncomfortable talking to children about: death and grief, loss, prejudice and fear, how to be brave, the difference between right and wrong, and even, sometimes, that parents and adults are just people, too. And for some children, when the all-too-real world is forced upon them, it offers a place to escape to. Calling a book “children’s literature” is not demeaning at all.

Photo

thominoz:

Unfortunately, this is a real restaurant and that is a real response. Their page was not hacked and thus trolled (that I know of). The owners are just really crazy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6LY7TJ16pg

holy FUCK watch that video

i just watched that video (and the part 2). unbelievable

I’m like 7 minutes in and jesus christ

HOLY BALLS, I SAW THE FULL EPISODE ABOUT THIS TRAIN-WRECK OF A RESTAURANT.

GORDON RAMSAY LEFT THE RESTAURANT WITHOUT CHANGING IT BECAUSE HE SAID HE WAS SCARED AND DISTURBED BY THE PLACE AND IT’S OWNERS.

LET ME REPEAT THAT.

GORDON FUCKING RAMSAY SAID HE WAS SCARED AND DISTURBED BY HOW VICIOUS THE OWNERS ARE.

Signal boost. Let’s make sure they go out of business.

I’m all for destroying the business, at this point. The entire episode sickened me beyond belief. I think the most hated thing was the owner taking all the tips. FUCK him, and FUCK his wife. They don’t belong in that business whatsoever.

God if it wasn’t illegal I’d burn that shit hole down myself. That dumb blonde bitch needs to die in a fire.

omg

Holy fuck.
